What made the series engaging was that Dan Carlin 1) really knew his history 2) was genuinely interested in the content matter and 3) has a compelling storytelling style. In it, he chronicles the story of one of the greatest empires on the planet starting from Temujin's origins to the eventual conquering of the world. The series that I finished so far is the Wrath of the Khans, which contains five parts. Like all great epics, like Star Wars or Lord of the Rings, these episodes are more like verbal blockbusters with a new series having sequels and further parts. Episodes are easily 3 to 4 hours long and quite frankly, it's epic. I mean, more-than-halfway-to-San Francisco-from-Orange County long. If you're looking for a podcast that's going to be your companion on long trips, Dan Carlin's Hardcore History is among the few podcasts that go really long.
